A passport is an official document certifying your identity as a citizen and entitling you to travel under the protection of the Government of Ghana in foreign countries. In other words, before you can be recognized as a citizen of any country, the passport is your insurance policy.
Before you can apply for a passport in Ghana, you need to provide your Ghanaian birth certificate as proof of citizenship.
There are 2 ways to apply. You can either apply manually or online. The manual process is the commonly used as the online process is only limited to Passport Application Centres in Accra, Tema and Koforidua.
The manual application process however is nationwide and available at all regional application centres, thus preferred by many. Below is the step by step process for manual application.
STEP BY STEP PROCESS FOR MANUAL PASSPORT APPLICATION:
*Download the passport application form from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website (www.mfa.gov.gh)
*Pay for the processing of your application. This is done by logging on to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. Click on menu where a drop down appears and select “PASSPORT”. Another drop down appears then select “MANUAL PASSPORT APPLICATION”. You will be required to fill the following:
- Passport applicant’s full name
- Applicant’s email (optional)
- Applicant’s mobile number. Please note that the number provided here must be a registered mobile money number if want to pay via mobile money.
*Select Application Type Whether Expedited or standard application. This simply means Express or Normal process. Note that the cost for the expedited is GHc100.00 and that of standard is GHc50.00. I recommend you choose standard since the express doesn’t really get delivered early. It may take the same time as standard application, sometimes even longer. This is how things work in Ghana.
*Enter Payment Details
Here, you have three options to choose from:
- VISA or MasterCard
- MTN Mobile Money
- Vodafone or vCash
*Click on the final button “MAKE PAYMENT”.
Note that when you select option 2 or 3, you will be prompted on your mobile device to approve payment.
After the payment is approved, you will receive an SMS containing a “Paid Voucher Code” on the Mobile number you entered at the Personal Details section. Note that the Pay Voucher Code message may delay but shouldn’t be more than 24 hours. Where the delay lasts for more than 24 hours, you would have to contact the officials at the Passport Application Centre (PAC) for assistance.
Write the Paid Voucher Code on your completed Manual Form.
Submit the completed Manual Form to the PAC for further processing with valid documents such as Driver’s Licence or National ID. If you are employed, you need to provide a proof of profession which could be an employee identity card or an introductory letter from your employer. You may provide a student ID if you are currently in school. If you are out of school and unemployed, just indicate that you are unemployed.
If you are a Business Executive or a self-employed, you must tender your business registration certificate as proof.
After the applicant has been cleared at the PAC and all necessary details (biometric, birth Certificate, a valid ID, and other important documents required) have been taken, the applicant will be issued a receipt indicating the date the passport will be ready for pick up. The date is usually a one month period from the date of submission.
Do follow up on your passport on due date to verify whether it’s ready for pickup. It may however take more than a month.
